Since October 18, 2021, all applicants seeking a Class 1 commercial driver's license in Calgary must complete the Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program. This new requirement is designed to enhance safety, competence, and professionalism on the roads, ensuring that drivers of heavy commercial vehicles are fully prepared for the responsibilities that come with a Class 1 license.

What is MELT?
MELT is a government-mandated training program for Class 1 license applicants. It consists of 113 hours of structured instruction, covering all critical aspects of commercial driving. The breakdown of the training is as follows:
- 40.5 hours of classroom instruction.
- 15 hours of yard training.
- 57 hours of in-vehicle instruction.
